What's new in the GoPro Hero 12 camera
GoPro has released a new line of Hero 12 action cameras with some improvements.
What was removed?
- no GPS
What's new?
- HDR video – allows you to capture more detail while using multiple exposures at the same time.
- Increased Recording Time - Hero 12 can now record twice as long at 5.3k and 60fps. Previously, Hero 11 had a runtime of 35 minutes, now it is a whopping 70 minutes.
- Max Lens Mod 2.0 – Captures a wider 177-degree shooting angle at 4K 60fps. The previous Max Lens mod could only shoot 155 degrees at 2.7k 60fps on the Hero 11. GoPro says the MLM2 is only compatible with the Hero 12.
- Combination mount 1/4-20. The Hero 12 features a new type of mount that combines both GoPro folding legs and a 1/4-20 mount. You can also buy it as an accessory for an older GoPro Hero 8 or newer model. In our experience, the 1/4-20 hole on the GoPro Hero 12 is deeper than a regular accessory, so you can more securely insert a tripod, selfie stick, or monopod.
- Bluetooth microphone. It is now possible to use Airpods or a Bluetooth microphone as an external microphone or to issue voice commands over long distances.
GoPro Hero 12 Standard Features:
- Timecode - Allows you to sync an unlimited number of GoPro Hero 12 cameras for easy editing together. The Hero 12 also uses a QR code to sync timecode, but this time the QR code is in the Quik app, so you won't need the GoPro Labs QR code generator.
In the Quik app, tap the three dots next to the camera and select Sync Timecode. This option is also available on GoPro 11 or previous GoPro models compatible with GoPro Labs (Hero 5 Session and Heros 7 and later), provided the GoPro Labs firmware is installed.
- GP-Log mode
This is a new color profile with an even flatter gamut, allowing you to capture a wider dynamic range. Combined with the 10-bit color option and the ability to use Rec2020 via a QR code generator, it will be able to capture the second type of HDR video I mentioned in this post. To use GP-Log in Hero 12, you need to enable 10-bit mode and high bitrate. You'll then see a "Log" option in the profile settings for the video mode you've selected, next to "Standard" and "HDR."
- Stabilization 6.0
With every new GoPro Hero comes a new version of Hypersmooth stabilization. With Hypersmooth 6.0, your footage will be even smoother and smoother.
- Cloud editing Quik
If you upload videos to Quik, you can edit them without first downloading them to your phone. This feature is available for other GoPros as well.
- New menu system
Another difference is that the menu has been changed compared to the Hero 11 and previous GoPros. The new menu requires fewer button presses to select settings, but hides options in unfamiliar places. For example, if you want to select High bitrate and 10 bits, this is no longer in the Protune settings. Instead, you need to go to the Settings menu and the Video submenu.
